Guidelines for Packaging Products

Packaging methods and standards vary from industry to industry and from company to company. However, at Clean Room Products we have developed overall guidelines that will assist most companies in efficiently packaging their products to maintain proper cleanliness levels. The principles to bear in mind include:

1. The size of the bag in relation to the part. Sufficient room to envelop the product must be allowed within the primary barrier.

2. The strength of the bag in relation the part. Many bags used have three sides sealed, as contrasted to end-sealed tubing. Seal tests performed on a Carlton burst tester and on the folded seam of a bag made from tubing, show that the strength of the latter is comparable or greater to that of the former.

3. If parts have many orifices, it may be necessary to seal each one. During assembly, these orifices will not be exposed to the environment more than one at a time. (Specific instructions for sealing these holes are available upon request.)

4. If parts have sharp edges and projections, first wrap the part in two to four laps of nylon sheet film or tubing. These layers of film can be secured with PVC tape. After the part has been wrapped, enclose it in the first barrier bag and seal it.

It is important to restrict the motion of the part within the bag. To accomplish this, thoroughly evacuate the bag by cutting a corner of the sealed bag and inserting this slit into the opening of a vacuum tool with an orifice of approximately 1/8" x 1/2". After all of the air has been evacuated, seal the opening, over-bag and repeat the evacuation procedure. Automatic equipment is also available as an option.
