Guidelines for Avoiding Contamination During the Packaging Process

To maintain cleanliness while handling clean film and packaging parts, these precautions must be taken:

1. Packaging must take place in an environment of the same or greater level of cleanliness as that in which the final cleaning and inspection of critical parts will be conducted.

2. Clean room garments require the utmost attention. In fact, because clothes are the greatest breeders of contamination within a well-controlled clean room, they are often referred to as the "Uniform Menace." Cotton or wool clothes worn under uniforms aid in the transmission of lint and dust particles through the uniform and into the clean environment. Normal

operator motion causes ballooning of the uniform, and air permeating the garment carries with it particles 10 or more microns in diameter. If film is brought in the vicinity of the uniform, these fibers and particles will be attracted to it. Anti-static agents used in some of the films are generally ineffective in preventing this contamination. Operators should avoid intimate contact with critical parts and film in the packaging areas.

3. Precision-sharpened stainless steel scissors should be used to cut packaging film. After the initial cut is made, the scissors should be kept partially open and carefully pushed through the film, instead of using a "sawing" action by opening and closing the scissors. Razor blades may be used, if all cutting is done in "free air" and not on a solid surface.

4. An all-purpose impulse sealer should be used to seal plastic films. KNF Clean Room Products' line of impulse sealers incorporates a unique design especially for this purpose. (Please refer to the appropriate enclosed pages for a more detailed description of these sealers.)
